Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

  • Tire Width For 8" x 7" Americana Trailer Wheel AM20021
Hey Mark, The tire width you can use with the 8" x 7" Americana Trailer Wheel # AM20021 is an 8.9" wide tire. You can use the Loadstar K399 Bias Trailer Tire - 215/60-8 - Load Range C (935 lb capacity) # AM1HP26 or Load Range D (1,165 lb capacity) # AM1HP28.

  • Recommended Replacement Tires for Snowmobile Trailer Using 18.5x8.5-8 Tires
The metric trailer tire size corresponding to your 18.5 x 8.5 - 8 tires is size 215/60-8. In this size we offer both tires only and pre-mounted wheel/tire combinations that you can see on the linked page. The tires-only are available in two weight Load Range ratings, C and D. The Kenda C-rated tire # AM1HP26 can handle 935-lbs at its rated pressure of 50-psi. The Load Range D tire # AM1HP28 can handle up to 1165-lbs at 70-psi. In the combination wheel/tire items we again offer Load Range...

  • Comparing 215/60-8 Trailer Tires Load Range C Versus Load Range D
On your 18.5x8.5 x8 tires the actual measurements are the 18.5 inch diameter and the 8.5 inch width. The 215/60-8 tires actual measurement is 18.3 inches diameter and width of 8.9 inches. To prevent blowout, the higher load range which includes the higher ply rating is better. It will have a stronger sidewall. The Kenda # AM1HP26 with load range C (6 ply) is rated for 935 lbs at 50 psi and the Kenda # AM1HP28 load range D (8 ply) is rated at 1,165 at 70 psi. With your concern about...

  • Recommended Tires And Wheels To Replace 18.5/8.5-8 Tires On Triton Trailer
The tire size you can use as a replacement for your triton trailer is a 215/60-8. If you want just the tire, I recommend part # AM1HP28 which is a Load Range D tire. This 8-ply tire has a load capacity of 1,165 lbs at 70 psi. For a Load Range C tire only I recommend part # AM1HP26. This is a 6-ply tire and has a maximum load rating of 935 lbs at 50 psi. Both of these tires are bias-ply tires and will work on the rims you have for your tires. If you are looking for a wheel/tire combo...

  • Trailer Tire Recommendation for a Triton Snowmobile Trailer with 18.5x8.5-8 Tubeless Tires
We do have trailer tires that will fit your Triton Snowmobile trailer. Check out the Loadstar K399 Bias Trailer Tire, # AM1HP26. This is a tubeless, bias trailer tire that exceeds DOT standards. Its size is 215/60-8 which is the same as 18.5x8.5-8. The Kenda K371 Bias Trailer Tire, # AM10004, tire that you have referenced is too small for your trailer rims.

  • Best Trailer Tire Recommendation for Size ST205/75-15
The best tire for your trailer in the same size that you have is the part # AM10245. This is the highest capacity tire we offer in that size. It is a Load Range D with 2,150 lbs at 65 psi capacity. Your current tire is a bias-ply. I can tell by the letter D in the size. The # AM10245 is a radial which will be a better overall tire. A radial tire flexes more than a bias tire, giving it better ground contact, traction, stability, and tread wear. A radial tire will normally run cooler...

  • Is Trailer Tire Size 18.5 x 8.5 x 8 the Same as Trailer Tire Size 215/60-8
According to our resident tire expert, the 215/60-8 is the modern equivalent of the 18.5 x 8.5-8 tire. I have included a link to a tire sizing FAQ for you that compares different tire sizes. If you just need the tire, we have some options. First is # AM1HP26. This is a load range C tire rated for 935 pounds at 50 psi. Second is # AM1HP28, rated at 1,165 pounds at 70 psi. If you want a tire and wheel combo, we have two options. First, is # AM3H290, that comes with a white steel wheel....

  • Trailer Tire Recommendation for an Enclosed Trailer With ST205/75R15 Tires
If you have 4 load range C, ST205/75-15 tires, that is more than enough for 2,000 to 2,500 pounds. Each tire should have a capacity of 1,820 pounds at 50 psi. Trailer tires should always be inflated to their maximum psi rating for best performance and longest life. Radial tires are going to track better and give you a better ride without sacrificing durability. I recommend going with Karrier ST205/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range C, # AM10244, if you just want tires. If you want...

For your Triton 4 place snowmobile trailer, I recommend using the Kenda 215/60-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range D, # AM3H323. This tire and wheel combination has a maximum load of 1165 lbs at 70 psi. If you just want the tire, I recommend the Loadstar K399 Bias Trailer Tire - 215/60-8 - Load Range C, # AM1HP26, which has a load range c with a maximum load of 935 at 50 psi.

  • Comparing 215/60-8 Tires to 18.5/8.5-8 Tires for Height and Width
The 215/60-8 tires like # AM1HP26 should have a diameter of 18.2 inches and a width of 8.5 inches so they should be the same width and yet slightly smaller diameter. If you just go by the definitions these tires should be really similar with the 18.5/8.5-8. There is some variance in sizes depending on manufacturer as some take more liberties than others for instance the Kenda 215/60-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range D # AM3H323 has an outer diameter of...

  • What is Correct Replacement Trailer Tire for Older Size 18.5 x 8.5-8
The trailer tire size you referenced, 18.5 x 8.5-8, has a modern metric equivalent, which is size 215/60-8. This tire size fits rims that are 7-inches wide and when mounted and inflated the tire's overall diameter will be just over 18-inches. The linked article offers more information on tire sizes. In this 215/60-8 size we offer both tires on their own and tires that are pre-mounted on wheels. If you wish to order just the tire itself without a wheel you can select from two options that...

  • Are 4Ply Bias Trailer Tires as Strong as 6 Ply Trailer Tires of the Same Size
The higher the ply rating, the tougher a given tire size is going to be. I would stick with the tires that are recommended by the trailer manufacturer. A tire that is rated lower but the same size can wear out faster because of its lower capacity. Ideally you will want the tire capacity for an axle to meet or exceed the axle capacity (the capacity of the trailer does not increase if the tires exceed the axle capacity). Trailer tires should always be inflated to the maximum psi rating as...

  • Can Replacement Trailer Tires Be Filled With Foam
Filling tires with foam is a fairly common practice for farm or agricultural use, but our tire expert tells me that it's not a recommended practice for trailers that will be operated on paved roads. Once the foam is added to the tire, you've removed most of the flexibility of the tire which can cause a rougher ride, the vibrations from the rougher ride can be transferred to the tow vehicle. In some cases, the foam can deteriorate the inner liner of the tire. If your trailer has brakes,...

  • Recommendations For Replacing 8 Inch Wheels On A Snowmobile Trailer
With the 215/60-8 tire you currently have installed having an 18.5" diameter, the Kenda 4.80/4.00-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel # AM30020 will be a bit smaller at 16.1" in diameter. A better option will be the Americana Steel Trailer Wheel - 8" x 7" Rim - 5 on 4-1/2 # AM20026 and the Kenda Loadstar K399 Bias Trailer Tire - 215/60-8 # AM1HP26. The tire typically paired with the 8" x 7" steel wheel # AM20021 will be the Kenda # AM1HP26. This is a 215/60-8 tire with a load capacity of 935 lbs at 50 psi and has an M speed rating (81 mph), both of which should be more than enough for a mini bike build. When inflated the tire will measure 8.9" wide and 18.3" in diameter. You will also need a valve stem like # AM20903 as the rim does not have one included. If you would like, these all come preassembled as part # AM3H290.

  • Can Trailer Tires Be Balanced
Trailer tires do not have to be balanced but what is normally done when a tire and wheel combo is put together by the manufacturer is a sort of balancing. They take the heavy spot on the tire and line it up with the light spot on the wheel. The problem with balancing trailer tires is that it takes special equipment beyond what most tire shops have available. It takes a special rig to balance trailer tires and trying to balance them the same as vehicle tires will not work.

  • Replacement 12 Inch Camper Trailer Tires for 2,500 Pound StarCraft Pop-Up
The trailer manufacturer is probably factoring out the trailer tongue weight which would be carried by the tow vehicle. However, if the trailer is towed high in the front then that would put more weight on the trailer tires and could lead to problems. Going with higher capacity tires is a good idea. There are different 12 inch trailer tires sizes available. If you need 5.30-12 tires then you could use # AM10068 which is rated for 1,250 pounds at 105 psi. If you need 145/12 tires then...

It also means that you'll get longer life out of the tires. The slightly more aggressive tread of the # AM1HP26 will also contribute to longer tire life.
